Lawyer — Ship Finance
Devandran Karunakaran, a native of Singapore, grew up amidst the hustle and bustle of one of the world’s largest and busiest ports. This vibrant, commerce-driven environment played a pivotal role in shaping his early legal career aspirations, leading him to specialize in ship financing and advisement for offshore and renewable energy companies.
In the warmth of a nurturing home, he was raised by parents who were pillars of support and inspiration. His mother, a chef, was skilled in crafting authentic Southeast Asian delicacies, while his father served as the headmaster of an international school. Surrounded by a large, close-knit extended family, most of whom still reside in Singapore, he was instilled with strong family values.
Fulfilling his national duty, he dedicated 2–1/2 years of his life to serving his country before embarking on a journey to the United Kingdom. This move marked his transition into adulthood and the beginning of his professional voyage.
Embarking on his academic pursuit, he enrolled at the University of Leicester, a revered institution known for its research excellence and commitment to fostering advanced learning. Here, he developed a profound understanding and mastery of contract law, honing his skills in interpreting, enforcing, and governing legal and commercial agreements between entities. His intellectual curiosity also drew him to public international law, The Law of Nations, deepening his knowledge of the legal frameworks that underpin international relations.
The diversity at Leicester University enriched Devandran Karunakaran’s life, creating a tapestry of friendships with individuals from varied backgrounds and ethnicities. These relationships, built on shared experiences and mutual respect, have stood the test of time, with some friends playing significant roles in his personal life, such as being part of his wedding ceremony.
While at university, he also showcased his athleticism and team spirit as an active member of the rugby team, competing at a university level and further solidifying his leadership and collaborative skills.
Upon completing his postgraduate studies, he transitioned to London, diving into the legal world and securing a training contract with a prominent UK-based international law firm. This move was a strategic decision, recognizing the highly competitive nature of the UK trainee solicitor market and the rarity of training contracts, a prerequisite for qualifying as a UK solicitor.
